Seminar: Structure and therapeutic potential of nucleic acids

Nucleic acids are the biopolymers where genetic information is encoded. The combination of four different nitrogenous bases along DNA strands results in the core language of life.

The interpretation of this biological language is tightly linked to the three-dimensional structure that the nucleic acid molecule adopts. Thus, the double helix of DNA constitutes the preferred folding for those protein complexes in charge of DNA replication and transcription. Indeed, some therapeutic approaches to induce cancer cells death are based on altering the normal structure of the double helix by using DNA binders.

Since the first description of the double helix in 1953, a bunch of alternative structures of the nucleic acids have been discovered and detected in the cellular context. Some of these noncanonical structures of nucleic acids appear in regulatory regions of the genome. Thus, promoting their folding or unfolding has become an attractive strategy to modulate important cellular processes.

In this talk, I will review on novel therapeutic strategies involving nucleic acids as targets and as drugs. I will also illustrate how we apply the therapeutic potential of nucleic acids to combat Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) disease.
